If you’ve ever met Kelly Thomas, you know she has a lot to say about the apartment industry. Specifically, lots of advice about what worked and what didn’t work over her 25+ years in this industry. She is known as an industry innovator, speaker, trainer and problem solver. Starting out as a Leasing Consultant in college to starting her own multifaceted property management consulting firm, she’s become a master of multifamily ideas. Kelly began her career in the DC Metro area, specializing in Class A communities ranging from garden style to high rise with companies like Summit Properties and Trammell Crow Residential.
Kelly’s corporate management experience lead her in 2006 to help build a new region in Charlotte, NC for a little known company at the time called Greystar. She started as a Regional Property Manager, focused on new business development, then held the role of Director of Real Estate for many years, managing a portfolio of 7,000 units with direct reports including four Regional Property Managers. She worked with clients such as Faison, Childress Klein, Crescent Resources, Proffitt Dixon, Woodfield Investments, Prudential, Invesco, UBS and others.
Kelly left Greystar and started her own multifamily consulting firm in 2017, Pickle Bird Media, working with a variety of clients, exceeding their goals until rebranding and launching Rent That Apartment in 2024.
She holds the prestigious CPM® designation through IREM and is a licensed real estate broker in North and South Carolina. She is an active member of the Greater Charlotte Apartment Association and volunteers her time as a credential instructor.
Kelly is a breast cancer survivor and runs her own small non-profit benefitting families fighting cancer.
She resides full time in Charlotte, NC with her husband, two daughters and two devoted pups. When she isn’t solving occupancy and NOI challenges, you can likely find her in a beach chair with a great book, a cold beverage and her toes in the sand.
